A central heating system is one, which gives warmth to an entire building and to multiple rooms at once. Central heating is very different from the local heating, in which the heat is generated at one place, like a furnace room in the building.

A central heating system provides warmth to the whole interior of a building (or portion of a building) from one point to multiple rooms. When combined with other systems in order to control the building climate, the whole system may be a HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system.

One of the most common methods of generating heat is combustion of fossil fuels in a boiler or furnace. The heat that comes out is distributed through forced air via a ductwork, with water circulation in the pipes, or steams going through pipes. In many states in Europe, houses are installed with central heating due to the weather conditions. The electrical heating systems are not used by many as they are only practical for low cost electricity or only when one uses geothermal pumps.

From to the point of view of energy, a large amount of energy is lost if only one room requires heating. As the central heating system sometimes distributes heat without any requirement of it. If there are some buildings, which specifically need to heat one room, may like to use a non-central system like fireplace, room heaters or any other devices.

One of other systems for heating, which has been proved ideal, is underfloor heating. This uses technology like heat pumps and solar combisystems, and hence, gives future-proofing. Over time, there can be some problems with your central heating. Here are some easy steps on how to repair central heating.

Steps:

1. Initially, check the level of oil in your tank. For doing this, you will have to pull the plunger or lever of the sight gauge. If the oil level is below the normal marking level, then you will have to add some fuel in it. Give a call to the oil company for the delivery of oil.

2. Lightly touch the large pipe, which goes to the bottom of the boiler. If the pipe is cold to touch, then listen carefully for some vibrations to confirm that the pump is working properly. If you do not feel any vibration, this indicates that your pump has failed, and hence there is no water circulation. Now, you will have to loosen the brass nut on the side and make the pump bleed until all the air is out. If there is no air coming out, then it must be the right time to replace the pump.

3. If there are any funny noises coming from the duct, then remove it and clean it thoroughly. If you hear a humming or rattling sound, then it’s a sign that there is dust and debris stuck in the air intake. To repair this and prevent any further damage, take out the flexible duct, which is connected to the air intake in the boiler. Take a good look inside and take out all the debris and dust particles. Now, replace the duct and listen if there is still some sound coming.

4. You must also check the float valve to see if there is an overflow happening all the time. There are chances that the float valve maybe jammed or dirty. If none of these problems are there, then it is time to get a new immersion tank for your boiler.

Changing your furnace from oil burning to gas burning is a smart investment in your home–and in the planet. A more affordable fuel source for residential heating, natural gas is also the cleanest of the fossil fuels. That means you can cut your energy bills and polluting emissions all at once. If you’re ready to upgrade your home heating system, contact your local furnace company. These professionals can help with all of your oil to gas conversion needs.

With today’s high fuel costs, a gas furnace can help you save some serious cash. Did you realize it costs around one dollar less to produce 100,000 Btus with a gas furnace than with an oil furnace? It may not sound like much at first, but over the course of the entire fall and winter, that will really add up. In fact, oil to gas conversion can help you save hundreds of dollars in just one year.

But that’s not all you’ll be saving! Gas furnaces can also help you go green. As the cleanest-burning of all the fossil fuels, natural gas creates very little pollution. When you switch from burning oil to burning gas for your residential heating needs, you’ll be greatly reducing the amount of carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides your home emits. That means cleaner air and even a cleaner furnace (and no build-up means no need for annual furnace cleanings). For a cleaner, greener home, gas furnaces are the way to go.

Oil to gas conversion is a relatively simple, easy process. Your furnace repair contractor should be able to help with oil furnace to gas furnace conversion from running the necessary plumbing to ensuring your chimney is safe for use with gas. You can either replace the oil burner in your existing furnace with a gas burner, or get an entirely new, energy-efficient gas furnace. But no matter which oil to gas conversion option you choose, you’re sure to save money and help the planet at the same time. Contact your HVAC contractor today to get started!

If you want to take care of your furnace properly then you should acquaint yourself with the different kinds of furnace filters that are available on the market. Although disposable furnace filters are one of the most popular choices they are really one of the lowest quality filters that you can use.

Washable furnace filters on the other hand are much more durable and they save you money in the long run even though your initial outlay for them will be a little more then what you pay for the disposable variety.

The reason disposable filters are popular is that they are easy to use. Once a month you check your filter and if it is very dirty then you remove it and replace it with a new fiberglass filter. The problem is that these filters will cost you a fair amount because you have to keep buying them all the time. With a washable furnace filter, you can reuse it many times and only have to replace it when it wears out or tears.

Caring for a washable filter is quite simple though it requires a little more work then disposables. You simply remove the filter, rinse it off and dry it thoroughly and then replace it in your furnace.

Reusable filters cost a little more but remember that you do not need to replace them monthly. The filter can be reused many times and only needs to be replaced with a new filter if it gets worn out. Some people actually always keep two filters around.

This is so that they can remove the dirty filter and put in a new clean one and wash the dirty filter when ever it is convenient for them. The advantage of this method is that you don’t have to shut down your furnace for any length of time while you wait for your filter to dry.

The more responsibly we use energy at home, the more we can reduce our carbon footprint, and even improve the economy.

“Conserving energy is becoming critical not only in terms of the environment, but the economy. If a consumer saves $25 on their energy bill, they will invest that money in something else, which creates jobs and keeps the economy going,” says Ken Elsey, president and CEO of the advocacy group Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance.

Making some small changes to our energy use habits and using eco-smart products—which are now all over the market—are all it takes to be a greener energy user.

Earth Day today is the perfect time to start or step up your efforts to save the environment from further damage.

Seal it up

Heating is one of the biggest energy users in a house and a home not properly insulated can waste heat.

“Any small cracks in a house create heat loss. Because of that, your heater has to work overtime,” Elsey says.

Make sure all your windows are well caulked, he says. If you’re painting a room, pry off the trim around the windows and cover them with a foam sealant to fully plug all crevices.

Keep a furnace fit

A dirty furnace filter reduces the flow of hot air, which means your furnace has to run longer to heat your house.

“A properly running furnace will use less energy and cost less to operate,” says Elsey, who recommends you have your furnace serviced once a year.

Consider investing in an Energy Star furnace, which are much more efficient and can help you save significantly on your heating bill.

Let nature do her job

Landscape your property in a way that enables you to rely less on your heating and air conditioning, Elsey says.

“You can plant a maple tree on the south side of your home, and use it effectively for shade in summer. In winter, the leaves disappear, and you have warming rays coming in. So it has a positive impact in both summer and winter.”

Power down

Plug all of your electronics, such as your TV, CD player and DVD player, into a power bar with an on/off switch, Elsey recommends.

“This helps cut out the phantom power that is being used even when these electronics are turned off.”

If you’re in the market for new electronics, he adds, think about going for Energy Star models.

Be water wise

The hot water you use in your washing machine may be the biggest water-related consumer of energy in your home, Elsey says, but other water appliances also use their fair share.

“Whenever you turn on the tap, hot or cold, that water is being pumped by the municipality, and energy is being used for that process, which is reflected in your water bill.”

Investigate low-flow shower heads and toilets, as well as tap aerators, to help reduce the amount of water you use.

And take short showers which use less water than baths.

As for your washing machine, “we’ve done studies that show clothes come out just as clean with cold water as with hot water,” Elsey says.

The way forward

He points out that technology is playing a vital role in the way we use and conserve energy, with devices and features such as programmable thermostats, compact fluorescent light bulbs, light dimmers and solar water heaters making it possible for us to be more sustainable energy users.

But the real breakthrough in energy conservation lies in being able to automate all energy-using functions of a home, he says, and it’s one that we’ll have to embrace to keep our energy costs at their current levels.

“If we keep using energy like we do today, people are going to see 25% increases in their energy bills,” Elsey says. “Home automation is really the next technology leap that’s going to make a big difference in saving energy.”

Are you worried about gas furnace maintenance? This is something that you have to think about if you have one of these systems in your home. Although it is important that you learn a thing or two about your system, you also need to keep in mind that hiring a professional can be a very good idea. With professional help you never have to worry about your furnace breaking down and leaving you stranded. Instead, you can always get assistance when you need it.

Gas furnace maintenance is something that many professionals specialize in. What type of gas furnace maintenance can I do on my own? This all depends on what you know about your system, and of course, what you are comfortable with. Some people may be able to maintain their furnace for its entire life – this is definitely a good thing.

When you do everything on your own you are going to learn a lot, while also saving money. What more could you ask for? At the very least you should consider learning about the basics of gas furnace maintenance; this will serve you well in the long run. You might also find that a lot of the basic maintenance is really simple and easy to do yourself. Changing an air filter or checking the thermostat hardly requires a professional.

The nice thing about hiring a professional is that you leave no doubt. You know for sure that the job is going to get done on time and without any mistakes. If you are unsure of your own handy work, you may find yourself doubting the work you have done. This can lead to a lot of unnecessary stress and in some cases a big repair bill. It’s best to avoid doing repairs by yourself, if you are uncertain or have some doubts about the job.

There are many fixes that need to be evaluated by a professional because they can be very serious. For instance, a leaking gas or propane line is a big problem. This is not something that you should ever try to fix on your own unless you have experience and know for sure that you are able to handle the job.

If you want to forget about gas furnace maintenance altogether you should hire a professional. This is the easiest way to keep your furnace maintained, and to have all problems fixed in the proper manner. Sure, you can learn a thing or two about maintenance as well but in the long run you may be best off hiring a professional when you need help. At the very least, this is something to consider if you rely on a gas furnace. A professional can help in many ways.

At a dinner this week in San Francisco, I found myself seated between Matt Golden, co-founder of energy efficiency retrofitter Recurve — the startup formerly known as Sustainable Spaces — and Cisco DeVries, co-founder of Renewable Funding, the Oakland outfit that pioneered municipal financing of residential solar arrays.

The hot topic was Home Star — aka Cash for Caulkers — the proposed $6 billion federal energy efficiency rebate program now wending its way through Congress. The bill is being cast as a way to fight climate change, lower energy bills for 3.3 million homes and create an estimated 168,000 sustainable green jobs in a recession-wracked nation.

No surprise that a coalition of environmentalists, labor groups, and businesses have hitched their star to Home Star, including Home Depot, Dow Chemical, the Sierra Club, and the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute.

About $3.6 billion of Home Star cash would be devoted to “Silver Star,” a program designed to quickly roll out basic energy efficiency improvements by providing up to $3,000 in rebates per household for such things as insulation and sealing doors and windows.

The Gold Star part of the program offers $3,000 for every 20 percent in energy savings that result from retrofits, up to a maximum of $8,000. Under Gold Star, homeowners could undertake more extensive energy efficiency retrofits as well as install renewable energy systems such as solar arrays.

Both programs would cap the rebates at 50 percent of a project’s cost.

“This program is designed to rapidly create jobs but also a long-term American industry,” Golden said a couple days after the dinner during a press conference held in advance of Congressional hearings Thursday. “We have an opportunity to contribute to energy independence and meet our climate goals. The construction industry is in the realm of a Depression. These are 100 percent American jobs.”

It’s winning rhetoric but what I wanted to know was this: with billions of dollars in federal subsidies potentially flooding the energy efficiency market, how do you ensure that retrofits are done properly and that the climate change dividend gets paid?

Talk to old-timers who lived through various solar subsidy programs back in the 1970s and ’80s and they’ll bemoan the shoddy operators that tried to cash in on the market, giving legitimate companies a bad name.

Golden takes pains to emphasize that Home Star energy efficiency retrofits will be audited to ensure “the American taxpayer is getting their money’s worth.”

The details of those audits remain to be worked out but some high-tech tools could help make sure those caulking guns shoot straight.

Over the past year there’s been a proliferation of home energy management software from companies like Google and Microsoft as well as startups such as AlertMe and Tendril.

Holm\\’s elecrticy usage by year graphic. New Microsoft Hohm software provides real time data on home energy useThe idea behind services like Microsoft’s Hohm and Google’s PowerMeter is to give homeowners data — in real time for those whose utilities have hooked up smart meters — on their energy use. That way they can pinpoint where they may be wasting electrons, whether through bad habits or electricity-hogging appliances, and adjust their behavior accordingly.

I asked Microsoft executive Troy Batterberry whether Hohm could play a role in Home Star to monitor electricity usage before and after a retrofit and quantify the energy savings from various improvements.

“Absolutely and it’s a question we get from our utility partners,” said Batterberry, who runs the Hohm program. “We’re going to have mountains of data that we can use to verify, say, what the expected savings will be when a person puts in a new high efficiency heat pump or air conditioner.”

“Home Star could ignite the use of this type of tool,” he added.

Such programs could also come in handy in helping retrofit firms identify energy hogs in a home.

Dan Reicher, director of climate change and energy program’s for Google.org — the search giant’s philanthropic arm — discovered that feature of the company’s PowerMeter energy management software when he began using it at his home.

“Literally with PowerMeter, everyone discovers something about their home they didn’t know about,” Reicher told me during a recent visit to Google’s Silicon Valley headquarters. “In my case I had an old gas furnace but decided that given we don’t have a lot of cold weather around here it didn’t make a lot of sense for me to replace it. What I didn’t realize was that the furnace had an ancient electric motor.”

Once Reicher started using PowerMeter he began to notice spikes in his home’s electricity usage every time the furnace came on. After some investigation he discovered the culprit was the old inefficient motor that pushed hot air through the house’s ductwork.

Such data could help make those Home Star dollars go even further by providing at least a partial roadmap of a home’s energy efficiency weak spots before the guys and gals with the caulking guns show up at the front door. And assure taxpayers that their dollars are well spent.

When most people think of a clean home, they think of sparkling countertops, perfectly polished floors and neatly vacuumed carpets. But for Marti Matsch, director of communications at Eco-Cycle, it’s the quality of air circulating through the home that determines how clean it is.

“When you are wiping toxins onto your countertop or floor, that is not really a clean home even through it may be dirt or grime free,” Matsch said.

So, with many people about to embark on their spring-cleaning tasks, Matsch suggests making an effort to change the way we clean and the products we use to improve the air quality of the home as well.

“What I would impress upon folks is that indoor air pollution can be significantly worse than outdoor air pollution because we have toxins in our homes that have no way of escaping,” Matsch said.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, people spend 90 percent of their time indoors, making indoor air pollutants more of a health risk than the air outside. Matsch said that many common household items — cleaning supplies, health and beauty products, candles, air fresheners and even carpets and furniture–can trap and release harmful chemicals. However, she said that there are non-toxic alternatives for all of these things.

First, Matsch said people should realize that they do not need to clean their homes with toxins. She said it is very easy to make your own cleaning solutions that stand up to their toxic counterparts in cleaning power, such as vinegar and water. But for those who don’t want to make their own products, Matsch said Boulder residents are lucky to have non-toxic cleaners at most local stores.

She said the key is to read labels and avoid products with ingredients such as ammonia, chlorine and bleach. Matsch said many toxic products contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are specially designed to evaporate easily into the air, so looking out for products with no or low VOCs is also important.

When buying new carpet, look for natural fibers such as wool.

Kristy Bruce, a salesperson at Ellie’s Eco Store in Boulder, said another quick fix is to replace plastic shower curtains with natural hemp shower curtains and bath mats.

“Hemp is great because it is naturally antibacterial and antifungal,” Bruce said.

Bruce also said that buying products made of renewable resources or recycled glass or bamboo is also easy and effective.

Matsch said that another great practice is to always remove your shoes when you enter the home.

“Don’t ever walk around inside with your outdoor shoes on,” she said. “You drag in outdoor pesticides and your carpet acts as a reservoir and just traps them.”

She said pesticides are meant to break down within days outside but inside, they can be retained in carpets and furniture for years.

When it comes to personal hair and beauty products, Matsch said everything from nail polish to hair spray to shampoo has a low VOC or non-toxic alternative.

Even air fresheners and candles that are used to keep homes smelling clean and fresh often contaminate the air, she said.

“There are so many natural products on the market that smell great and use an herbal essence mixed with water,” Matsch said. “Or you could even just open a window.”

Another tip to clean up the quality of the air in your home, Matsch said, is to always store toxic products, such as automotive supplies, paints, solvents and varnishes, in a garage, an outdoor shed, or anywhere else that will not contaminate your indoor air. She also said that it is important to properly dispose of unused or unwanted toxic products through the Boulder County Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

The furnace is another place that emits lots of particles into the air so Matsch said it is important to make sure to change furnace filters regularly and keep good general upkeep of your furnace.

Overall, Matsch said it is important for people to get into the habit of reading label’s and making sure to avoid key words like poison, toxic, corrosive, volatile, flammable, combustible, explosive, caution, warning or danger.

“I like to challenge the notion of what clean is,” Matsch said. “There is a non-toxic alternative for all these things.”

Chemical sensitivity — also termed toxic injury, environmental illness or sick building syndrome — refers to the repeated appearance of symptoms like headache, confusion, sleepiness, upset stomach, aching joints, or problems with ears, nose, and throat resulting from relatively low levels of exposure to chemicals. The good news is that the symptoms improve or disappear entirely when the triggering chemicals are removed.

According to the EPA, the air in our homes is often two to five times more polluted than the air outside. Since people spend 90 percent of their time indoors, this is particularly alarming, especially for the young, elderly, chronically ill, and chemically sensitive who are more susceptible to the effects of pollutants.

Every day, we are exposed to hundreds of dangerous chemicals in our homes.

Green Irene, a national network of trained eco-consultants backed by a team of researchers, offers many effective ways to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals and improve your health.

Air it out

Good ventilation is key to improving indoor air quality. When you want to freshen up the house, try healthy alternatives to chemical-laden air fresheners. First, turn to nature. Open windows and allow fresh air to circulate, and fill your home with plants. Plants increase the amount of available oxygen and filter various pollutants.

You’ll also want to change your furnace and air conditioner air filter seasonally. Filters trap particles and debris that you don’t want in your furnace motor, much less your lungs. Look for air filters with higher MERV levels (like MERV 8 or MERV 13) to filter out more particles than the common blue fiberglass filters.

In addition to protecting the air in your home with a furnace filter, you’ll want to clean the air in your home. With so many different air cleaners on the market, selecting the right one can be overwhelming. For maximum protection from toxins, allergens, and other harmful particulate matter, purchase a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter that removes at least 99.97 percent of airborne particles .3 micrometers in diameter or larger.

Clean safely

Now that we’ve addressed the air, let’s talk about surfaces. Your first thought might be to keep them clean. Well, you’re right, but most household cleaners contain hazardous chemicals and carry a warning label identifying potential risks. Instead, try products made with plant- and vegetable-based ingredients and essential oils. Breathe easy and have a sparkling clean home with cleaners that are nontoxic, biodegradable and free of synthetic dyes.

Replace toxic items

Now let’s talk about you. Your body’s largest organ comes into contact with hundreds of chemicals every day. Lotions, soaps, detergents, perfumes, shampoos, lipsticks and deodorants use synthetic ingredients that can be toxic. Try organic products that are free of petrochemicals, parabens (preservatives), phthalates (plasticizers), synthetic fragrances and artificial colors. You might need to spend some extra time reading labels, but for the chemically sensitive, the effort is worthwhile.

In addition to personal care and cleaning products, your skin comes into contact with other items around the house that could be harmful. Many shower curtains, garden hoses and children’s toys, for example, contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a toxic chemical that can increase respiratory problems and can be carcinogenic. Again, check labels and seek greener alternatives made from all-natural ingredients.

Purify your water

Just like air cleaners, you can find several water purifiers on the market. Also like air cleaners, they are not all the same. To reduce contaminants in your tap water, drink water that has been filtered through a premium 10-stage filter that attaches to your kitchen faucet. Premium filters are also available for the shower and bath to filter out chlorine, and are particularly important for chemically sensitive people who have itchy eyes, dry skin, or scalp pain after they shower.

Eliminate VOCs

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a major contributor to indoor toxins, and are found in many common household items. To minimize their effects, work from the ground up. Most carpets are treated with chemicals that off-gas VOCs. Carpets also trap dirt, allergens, mold, and even pesticides tracked in from outside. Consider replacing old carpet with solid surface flooring. If you must have carpet, look for “Green Label Plus” certified carpet. Fresh paint also is full of VOCs, so look for no- VOC paints and finishes.

Green Irene recommends Benjamin Moore’s Natura line. In addition to these concerns, most of us unwittingly sleep on petrochemicals, formaldehyde, fire retardants and other VOCs every night when we recline on polyester sheets and polyurethane foam mattresses. Bedding products made with natural fibers and no chemical treatments may be the best means to a refreshing night’s sleep. Again, look at the labels, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

It’s not easy for a chemically-sensitive person to live in a world we’ve so efficiently packed with chemicals. But when it comes to your home, chemically sensitive or not, there are ways to protect yourself. Just take the information above, combine it with the will to make a few changes around your home, and you’re that much closer to creating a healthier environment for your entire family.

Furnaces for use in mobile or manufactured homes are considerably different from standard home furnaces. It is necessary to choose and purchase the right heating system, which is suitable for use in your mobile home. You must get a system which is specifically designed for use in a mobile home. Air ducts are small and corners are tight. The result is that air does not flow quite as freely or easily as it does in a standard home.

Furnaces designed for use in mobile homes are turned out by some of the same manufacturers who make standard furnaces. When you have come to decision to get a new furnace you must note that these machines use a much different ratings system, than those used for a standard home. These furnaces are quite different and have different installation methods. They also have considerably different venting and ducting systems than those of ordinary homes.

The ducting system, as a result of the small space, is of small dimensions compared to that used in an ordinary house. Furnaces which were designed and made for standard homes cannot be used to heat mobile homes. Installation of such a furnace results in dangerous conditions. A sealed combustion vent system is specifically designed for use in mobile and manufactured homes. This is completely different from the system used in ordinary furnaces.

The heat vents absolutely must be installed around the exterior walls. In an area of cold winter climate this is even more essential. Cold air is sucked in from outdoors by the sealed combustion unit, and due to the seal, no fumes are released into the home. Vents which may be in the outside walls, ceiling or floor are used to suck air into the furnace. These air intake and exhaust vents are very well sealed so as to completely prevent the escape of air.

The furnace chosen must be correctly sized for the mobile home in which it is to be installed. The exact size will very much depend on climatic conditions in your area. A heating system which could be exactly right in a warm climate would of course be too small for use in in a colder climate. An undersized furnace must continue running non stop to heat the home. The result of this is inefficiency and considerable waste of money. It is very necessary to select a furnace which is properly rated for the size of your mobile home, and the climatic conditions. The best way to be sure that this takes place is to obtain some advice from a local heating expert who is experienced in the area.
